Immature love says: ‘I love you because I need you.’ Mature love says: ‘I need you because I love you.’ ~Erich Fromm
2017 Facilitators: Kate & Joel Feldman
Here are five important relationship skills to learn and practice. Certainly there are more than five, but these will get you started.
1. Learn to identify your feelings.
Most of us know what we are thinking.
2. When you speak, use I statements. Talk about what you think, what you feel, what you perceive, what you remember, etc.
3. Listen. Every person in the world has value as a human being.
4. Ask for what you need and want. Don’t make people guess.
5. Learn the art of giving feedback when someone is doing something you don’t like.
After practicing for a while, you’ll notice you begin to make these skills your own. This is when you have the experience of being the master of your communications. A great comfort and sense of aliveness accompanies the integration of relationship skills. After awhile they are not skills, but just your way of being in the world. Intimacy, connection, friendship, family relationships are freer and more satisfying!
Signing up for BCC 2017 is how we say, ‘I want our relationship to last’.
BCC Veteran Challenge:
When Donald and I first went to the Banff Couples Conference we had separate reasons for being there: I wanted to reconnect with my ‘every man is an island’ husband and he wanted me all to himself in a remote hotel room.
The experience we had was like none other. We both came away extremely satisfied, with a renewed commitment to honour each other.
I could go on and on about our first time, then our second and third but we are the newsletter editors and this is a challenge for all those couples that dedicate this special weekend to their relationship. We want to hear from you.
Please share a moment you’ve had at a previous BCC and the reason you signed up for 2017. Something short and sweet is all we require. Send us your story!
